Plea to save Ayr's Gaiety Theatre1.19.00pm BST (GMT +0100) Fri 12th Jun 2009 Jim Hume, Liberal Democrat MSP for the South of Scotland, has today made a plea to South Ayrshire Council to do all in its power to save the Gaiety Theatre in Ayr. The Theatre was closed earlier in the year and a full blown campaign to have it re-opened is now underway.Jim Hume MSP: South of Scotland Jim Hume MSP said: “The Theatre was very sadly closed earlier in the year, and local residents and regular visitors to the town are understandably keen to see it re-open. It’s important for tourism in the town and as a consequence the local economy. “Positively, South Ayrshire Council officials say that efforts are underway to secure funding for the Theatre and I have asked for clarification of what this actually means as well as advice on when they envisage the Theatre re-opening. The MSP continued: “The Pavilion Theatre in Glasgow has made a bid to run the Gaiety Theatre, a proposal popular with the Scottish Music Hall and Variety Theatre Society. “We will have to wait and see what the Council comes up with and whether they accept the Pavilion’s offer, but whatever happens, I sincerely hope that officials are able to save this much loved Theatre.”
