Lib Dems reveal postcode lottery for obesity surgery

Scottish Liberal Democrat Health spokesperson Ross Finnie MSP has revealed a postcode lottery for obesity surgery across Scotland.

Information obtained using Freedom of Information requests shows that although 256 patients were referred for obesity surgery, only 165 operations were carried out. The information also revealed that some Health Boards, like NHS Tayside and NHS Western Isles do not offer obesity surgery. NHS Dumfries & Galloway and NHS Forth Valley have to contract out obesity surgery to the private sector.

Commenting, Mr Finnie said:

“Scotland is in the grip of an obesity epidemic.

“We need to tackle the root causes of obesity, particularly for children.

“Most obese Scots can get their weight down by changing their diet and taking more exercise. But for some, surgery is the only answer.

“Our research reveals a postcode lottery for obesity surgery across the country.

“I am sending our findings to the Health Secretary because the Scottish Government needs to take action.

“At least 256 patients were referred for surgery on the NHS last year, but only 165 operations were carried out. Some patients are missing out because of where they live and that’s not fair.

“Experts are clear that offering surgery to patients who cannot get their weight down under normal circumstances will improve their health and save the NHS money in the long term.”
